What I’m Reading this Spring: 2021

Spring reads 2021

Shaking off the dust of a long winter and looking toward a (hopefully) mild, warm spring, requires a whole new stack of exciting new reads … obviously, right? So here is a look at the new releases I’m grabbing this Spring! Many of which have gloriously Springtastic covers … which is also important for self-evident reasons 😉

Good Eggs

Good Eggs book coverWritten by Rebecca Hardiman

Published by Atria Books

Available March 9, 2021

This story sounds 100% perfect for me: a combination of familial drama, learning to live your best, truest life, and a kleptomaniac 80-something year old woman … it has all the elements! Kevin Gogarty is having a rough patch – his wife is away on business, his teenage daughter is acting up at her boarding school, and his 83 year old grandmother has been caught shoplifting … again. Deciding to hire a home aide to help out, Sylvia seems like the saving grace he needs. Until she launches the family into its greatest crisis yet! This just sounds like a fun, hilarious, heartwarming adventure and I can’t wait to get into it, the audiobook also sounds fantastic.

Good Company

Good Company book coverWritten by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney

Published by HarperCollins

Available April 6, 2021

I do enjoy some Young Adult and it definitely has its place in my reading repertoire, but more and more I find myself needing to read stories centred around adults, with adult conflicts, adult decisions and real-world circumstances … aka – not being a hidden chosen one needed to conquer a “great evil” and save all civilization. Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney, who proved her excellent talents at familial drama writing with her debut The Nest in 2016, returns with another heartfelt fiction. Flora Mancini has been happily married for twenty years … or so she thought. But everything she thought she knew about her life, love and friendship with her best friend, is thrown away when she discovers an envelope containing her husband’s wedding ring – the one he claimed to have lost one summer when their daughter was five. Struggling for years in Manhattan to keep husband Julians theatre company – Good Company – afloat, the couple moved to LA and finally found success. But Flora is realizing that her happy life may have been built on lies …

The Beautiful Ones

The Beautiful Ones book coverWritten by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Published by Tor Books

Available May 11, 2021

This novel was actually first published in 2017 and is being re-released following Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s massively successful dark noir, Mexican Gothic, from last year. Typical of Moreno-Garcia’s style – this story will bring some paranormal elements but nestled within a fantasy, romance framework. A synopsis: The Grand Season of Loisail has just begun and Nina is determined to make a good impression and join the ranks of “The Beautiful Ones” – the notable, powerful socialites. But things have already gone massively wrong – Nina is struggling to control her telekinesis, resulting in vicious gossip and being labeled the Witch of Oldhouse. When entertainer Hector Auvray – a fellow telekinetic – arrives Nina is besotted. Hector sees Nina as a talent that can ripen under his tutelage and a romance soon blossoms … but Hector is hiding powerful truths that threaten to end their romance before it truly begins.

Becoming Leidah

Becoming Leidah book coverWritten by Michelle Grierson

Published by Simon & Schuster

Available April 13, 2021

For fans of magical realism and the writing styles of Neil Gaiman and Yangzee Choo Becoming Leidah is a love story, set in 19th Century Norway between a woman rescued from the sea and the fisherman who saves her and their unusual daughter – born with blue skin and webbed hands and feet. Her mother, Maeva, tries to hide the girl from the suspicious townsfolk of the Ørken, just as she conceals her own magical ancestry from her daughter. Maeva’s husband, Pieter, wants nothing more than for his new family to be accepted by all. But unlike Pieter, who is blinded by love, Maeva is aware that the villagers are watching for any sign of transgression—and are eager to pounce and punish. Meanwhile, following both mother and daughter from the shadows and through time, an inquisitive shapeshifter waits for Maeva to finally reclaim who she once was.

A Master of Djinn

A Master of Djinn book coverWritten by P. Djeli Clark

Published by Tordotcom

Available May 11, 2021

After we’ve finished up crying with the above read, it’ll be time to turn our fancies to this fantasy/ steampunk/ historical fiction debut novel. Just read this Goodreads synopsis: Cairo, 1912: Though Fatma el-Sha’arawi is the youngest woman working for the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities, she’s certainly not a rookie, especially after preventing the destruction of the universe last summer. So when someone murders a secret brotherhood dedicated to one of the most famous men in history, al-Jahiz, Agent Fatma is called onto the case. Al-Jahiz transformed the world 50 years ago when he opened up the veil between the magical and mundane realms, before vanishing into the unknown. This murderer claims to be al-Jahiz, returned to condemn the modern age for its social oppressions. His dangerous magical abilities instigate unrest in the streets of Cairo that threaten to spill over onto the global stage. Alongside her Ministry colleagues and her clever girlfriend Siti, Agent Fatma must unravel the mystery behind this imposter to restore peace to the city – or face the possibility he could be exactly who he seems.

Finally, when our weary bookworm minds need a romantic escape … somewhere around the May long weekend … we will grab this romantic contemporary centring around Kara Sullivan, a bookworm extraordinaire and best selling romance author, who’s life is full of love – just in a fictional form.
