July 2019 Reading Wrap-Up

July was another month that I feel a bit behind on my reading … coming in with 6 reads. But (!) most of these were 4 or 5 stars!!

1. We Hunt the Flame 3.75*: This was a DNF for me last month. I made it about 100 pages in but the story was slow and not grabbing me. We had a stretch of cooler weather and I wanted to give this another go – I’m glad I did because the book really picked up around the 200 page mark. However, I don’t think a book should take that long to get going – hence the lower rating. You can read my full opinions here.

2. Enchantee 4*: This was just such a fun, entertaining read! I love books set in late 18th Century Paris, the court of Marie Antionette, and the French Revolution. This had enough brevity and heft to keep from being “fluff” but was sparkly, romantic and really brought to life the time period. Full review here.

3. The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry 5*: Likely my new favourite book … maybe of all time. For such a short book it pulled a massive emotional punch for me. I was so wrapped up in A.J’s story, the quirky characters, the small island setting and of course, the bookstore. It is a book lovers dream book. Review here.

4. Sorcery of Thorns 4.5*: Another book that is written for book lovers – just with a fantasy, magical take. The characters were fully realized and interesting, I adored the romance, the setting/world was vivid, and books could communicate! Review here.

5. Summer of ’69 4*: This was a perfect smart, summer read exploring the dynamics of families and secrets, social and political change, first loves and the struggles of life that remain the same generation after generation. Read full review here.

6. The Tiger at Midnight 3.5*: This book was kinda of a “meh” for me. It wasn’t really bad, it just wasn’t really great either. It often got bogged down in over-explanatory paragraphs and “telling, not showing”, while also leaving gapping plot holes. I liked the concept and really wished I could’ve connected stronger with the characters. Ultimately it was entertaining, but will likely be forgettable.
