OwlCrate Jr kicked off 2020 with a theme of “Magical Maps” – a celebration of our favourite literary worlds and new, uncharted territories. So let’s dive in to the goodies:

Our favourite item this month is the awesome canvas Neverland map wall hanging. This was designed by Hanna Sandvig and includes lots of nods to Peter Pan, which I personally enjoy, especially the little bitty Tinkerbell in the corner. Unfortunately the string attached at the top is very thin for such a heavy item and ours was broken when we pulled it out of the box. But I was able to fix this with some hot glue and a bead, it is just unfortunate because OwlCrate is usually tops for quality.

Harry Potter Marauders fanny-pack. This item is so cool and is really excellent quality – thick canvas, durable zipper and a sturdy, adjustable belt. Designed by Mallory Young, I love the details and little footprints that come up the top of the pack! This is going to be very useful for field trips, trips to the zoo and camping/hiking in the summer.

This Ken Jennings book – Junior Genius Guide to Maps and Geography – was a really clever addition. Learning all about how to read maps, how they were created, history of maps and cool geography facts (ok, I find Geography cool since I did take a Science Degree in it … so I might be biased). I really appreciate that OwlCrate Jr continues to include STEAM items that fit so well into the monthly theme.

Shaking things up a bit for 2020, OwlCrate Jr has replaced their previous monthly buttons with a monthly sticker! The first sticker of this new collection was designed by Melanie Demmer. She also designed the fun sticker book included in this box – a really great way to keep all those stickers handy & organized and my daughter has already had a lot of fun decorating up the pages. Am I alone in my love of stickers and sticker books??

The book pick of the month is The Unmapped Chronicles: Casper Tock and the Everdark Wings by Abi Elphinstone. The book came signed, with an exclusive cover (which I l-o-v-e) and a letter from the author!

Overall Rating: A+

  • Neverland Map Wall Hanging: 2/3 – this is the first time I’ve been let down by the quality of an OwlCrate Jr item. I was able to fix it, but it is still disappointing when you have to hot glue your items back together.

  • Harry Potter Fanny-pack: 3/3

  • Ken Jennings Junior Genius Book: 3/3

  • Sticker + Sticker Book: 3/3

We love our OwlCrate Jr subscription here and this was another excellent box. If you are interested in a subscription to OwlCrate Jr please use my discount code – TALES15 – to save yourself 15%. I’ve been purchasing these boxes for four years and they continue to be such a delightful treat every month.

Note on Rating: I rate each item out of 3 possible points: 1 for quality, 1 for usefulness, and 1 for if I personally liked the item/fandom. I then assign an overall letter rating for the whole box.
