“Parallel Worlds”
The theme for November’s OwlCrate Jr was “Parallel Worlds” celebrating that most fantastical concept of travelling to alternate worlds from our own, probably my most favourite fantasy story element. It was another excellently curated box, so here’s what was included:
As always, starting off with our (my & my daughter’s) favourite item – the Spider-Verse inspired patch. We had just watched Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse the weekend before we got this box and fell in love with it! This patch is hotly contested by all members of the family!!
Coraline quote fabric backpack. This high quality drawstring backpack features the quote “Be wise, be brave, be tricky” from Neil Gaiman’s Coraline. I L-O-V-E Coraline, (I basically love everything Neil Gaiman), so I was very excited by this backpack. My little hasn’t read it yet, but she still really liked the design & quote – it will become her go-to swim bag.
Holly Dunn designed bookplates – inspired by Narnia and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Ohmygosh, if there are two fandoms I could never get enough merch from it is these two!! Unfortunately I cannot steal these from my little as she was just as excited for them and promptly put them in her books…
This rainbow neutron ball is the perfect fidget spinner/stress ball in my opinion. It has an eradicate bounce that my daughter loves to torment our Labrador with … but it is also nice and squishy. Excellent multi-purpose 🙂
Also included was another Puffins Chalk Board Classic – The Wizard of Oz – the quintessential parallel universe. While I have seen the movie (of course) and read a condensed picture book to my daughter when she was small a bazillion times (she was obsessed!), I haven’t read the original classic. This is going to be a nice read together/buddy read (she reads a chapter, I read a chapter) over her winter break!
Finally the book of the month — November’s book pick was The Starspun Web by Sinead O’Hart a combination of science fiction and historical fiction featuring parallel universes of course! The book came with an author letter and author signature bookplate. Also included was the monthly magazine with author interview, book recommendations and crossword puzzle. OwlCrate Jr has been picking excellent middle grade lately (Malamander and COG are both fantastic), so we are quite excited to read this next pick!

Another excellent box from OwlCrate Jr. The items are useful, fun, and draw on fandoms that fit perfectly with the theme. I know I sound like a broken record but I truly adore OwlCrate Jr … each box is carefully curated and full of fun, useful items that spark the joy of reading. I am fully in support of anything that can keep kids reading and this subscription service does a wonderful job of it. Can’t recommend enough!
Note on Rating: I rate each item out of 3 possible points: 1 for quality, 1 for usefulness, and 1 for if I personally liked the item/fandom. I then assign an overall letter rating for the whole box.
