I’ll be honest with you – I currently own more books than I likely can read this year. If I didn’t buy a single new book in 2020 (never.gonna.happen.) I could just, maybe, probably, almost read all my owned books on my shelves.
One of my top reading goals this year was to “shop my shelves” more. I liked this goal because it wasn’t a straight book-buying-ban, which I would never commit to and then just feel rubbish about myself as soon as I bought a book. But I do need some motivation to attack that TBR – so I came up with this list, The Top 7 Books I Own That I Want To Read in 2020 … to keep me on track and accountable.
So here they are.
Daughter of Smoke & Bone
Written by Laini Taylor
Published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Being a massive fan of Laini Taylor’s Strange The Dreamer duology – this series has been on my radar for awhile. We’ve got angels and demons falling in love, centuries old wars, characters that are half human-half animal, and a spunky, kick-butt girl with turquoise hair.

The City of Brass
Written by S.A. Chakraborty
Published by Harper Voyager
If my writing Queen, Laini Taylor, blurbs this as being a “magical, extravagant feast of a book” – I need to read it. This popular adult fantasy series looks like the kind of completely realized fantasy world you’ll just get lost in.

The Wrath & the Dawn Duology
Written by Renee Ahdieh
Published by Penguin Books
I truly don’t know much about this duo at all except that so many book tubers and bookstagramers tout it as the best YA duology. So obviously, I need to read this.

The Devil’s Thief
Written by Lisa Maxwell
Published by Margaret K. McElderry Books
I’m kind of nervous about this sequel to The Last Magician. I loved, loved, loved The Last Magician – the dark, gritty 1920s NYC setting, this time travelling, mysterious girl-thief, the dangerous stakes of possessing magic … just an excellently woven, dark tale that completely transported me. BUT! It was supposed to be a duology, then in the middle of writing The Devil’s Thief it turned into a trilogy … I’m worried this massive tome (almost 700 pages!) is going to be a lot of padding.

The Lunar Chronicles
Written by Marissa Meyer
Published by Square Fish
I have so many series I need to finish, but I am focusing on this one in 2020. I really enjoyed Cinder, I really enjoy Marissa Meyer’s writing, this is a beloved series. This is gonna happen.

Uprooted
Written by Naomi Novik
Published by Del Rey Books
I can’t remember why this came across my radar – the touted Beauty and The Beast retelling aspect? The searching for more adult fantasy novels? The fact that Spinning Silver was everywhere in 2018? Whatever the reason I’d been dragging my heals on this B&TB retelling where we have a master wizard fighting off an evil forest for the common folk taking a random girl every 10 years to live with him as payment. But I read it this month! (Yay me!!)

The Priory of the Orange Tree
Written by Samantha Shannon
Published by Bloomsbury Publishing
If you’ve followed along with me last year, this is no surprise. I have dragged this book month by month in my TBR and always shy away because, it’s 800 pages!! But dragons, magic, fantasy worlds, powerful queens all spell a recipe for my kind of book. I hope I can tackle this beast this year!
