I love that April’s LEGENDARY COURAGE box was packed full of goodies that all shared a really neat commonality: Rick Riordan! From Percy Jackson to some awesome titles under the Rick Riordan Presents franchise – this box was a big celebration of own-voices middle grade mythological fantasy! And I’m all for it!

First off is this really cool pop up lantern featuring a quote from Aru Shah and the End of Time: “Sometimes light illuminates things that are better left in the dark” and was designed by @heyatlascreative. This will be super handy when reading at night or to take along this summer while camping! 

Doubling the literary joy this month, OwlCrate Jr. included a second book! This is an early paperback release of last year’s Paola Santiago and the River of Tears by Tehlor Kay-Mejia. I am beyond thrilled that this was included because I almost bought this last fall but held off because I was sure it was going to be the OwlCrate Jr. book pick for September! My daughter and I have read almost every book in the Rick Riordan Presents franchise and I’m so happy to add this to our collection! 

My daughter was really happy to get this yummy yuzu-scented soap from @motherlandessentials and I’m really pleased to know that I’ve passed along my love of getting bath products in our book boxes! 😀 OwlCrate included a bar of soap from Motherland Essentials last fall and I loved it! This bar of soap was inspired by The Storm Runner. 

A mythological-based box would not be complete without Percy Jackson and this wonderful 8×10 poster designed by @inkus_dingus features the quote: A kind act can sometimes be as powerful as a sword. A wonderful reminder to frame and place above your desk or bookshelf!

Finally, the book pick! I am super thrilled that OwlCrate Jr. picked Cece Rios and the Desert of Souls by Kaela Rivera, one of my most anticipated middle grade reads for 2021! This sounds like an excellent own-voices mythology full of desert magic, bruja’s, internal strength, and maybe a wee bit of spookiness! The book came with an exclusive OwlCrate Jr. cover, a letter from the author and a signed bookplate!
